The S.S. Klondike
I visited Whitehorse over 25 years ago for the first time. Back then I was shocked at how much culture this little city held. Visiting again in 2026, it doesn't feel as if it has changed all that much. Still Welcoming, still beautiful, still packed with more culture and charm then its population would suggest.
“The S.S. Klondike was built in Whitehorse by the British Yukon Navigation Company (BYN), a subsidiary of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway (WP&YR).
Of shallow draft, she was specifically designed and constructed to eliminate the need to push a barge when carrying the heavy ore sacks coming out of the Mayo silver mining district upriver to Whitehorse.”
The thing we loved about Whitehorse, was the ease of walking around. Took this path along the river, that took us right to the S.S. Klondike stationed ashore and perfectly situated to be adored.
What is it about ships? This one was gorgeous, steeped in history, and occupied a few pages in my sketchbook. This sketch was one of my absolute favourites of the whole trip. Love the looseness and mood that was captured.
